Tourist Guide: Exploring La Fortuna in Costa Rica
La Fortuna is one of Costa Rica’s most dazzling gems. Located on the slopes of the majestic Arenal Volcano, this region is perfect for those seeking outdoor adventure, relaxation and direct contact with nature. If you are planning your visit, here is a complete guide with everything you need to know.
How to get to La Fortuna?
From San Jose
The direct bus from Terminal 7-10, located in downtown San José, costs 2,600 colones (approximately $5.50) and leaves daily at 8:40 a.m., arriving in La Fortuna around 1:00 p.m.

by car
You can rent a car and drive to La Fortuna. The trip takes about 3 hours via Route 1 (Interamericana) and then Route 702. It’s a convenient option if you want flexibility to explore.
Private transportation or tours
Companies like Interbus offer shared transportation with greater comfort, but at a higher price (between $50 and $60 USD).
From Monteverde

Taxi-boat-taxi
This is the most popular and scenic way to get there. It includes a land transfer, a boat ride on Lake Arenal, and then another land transfer to La Fortuna. The trip takes between 3 and 4 hours and costs around $35 USD/pp.
Bus
Although cheaper, this journey can take up to 5 hours due to connections and the lack of direct routes, but we leave the option to you if you wish to use it.
First, you must board the bus for Route 145 Monteverde – Tilarán. It is important to note that this route does not have terminals in Monteverde or the option to buy tickets online, as it is a rural service with basic infrastructure. The bus leaves daily at 7:00 a.m. from La Fábrica de Quesos de Monteverde, located in the center of Monteverde, or at 7:10 a.m. in front of Hotel El Sueño in Santa Elena. The cost per person is approximately $1.50 USD (930 colones) and the trip concludes at 9:00 a.m. at the bus terminal in Tilarán, after passing through several towns such as El Dos, La Florida, San Miguel, and Quebrada Grande.
Once in Tilarán, you must purchase tickets for Route 142 Tilarán – La Fortuna, which cost approximately $5 USD (2,500 colones) per person. However, there will be a considerable wait, as this bus leaves at 12:15 p.m. and arrives in La Fortuna around 3:00 p.m.
Depending on the location of your hotel or Airbnb, the bus may make a stop nearby, allowing you to get off and walk to your accommodation. Therefore, it is crucial to research the exact address of your accommodation before undertaking this journey. We recommend asking your host for the precise location and confirming with them if the Tilarán-La Fortuna bus route passes through the area. Some accommodations, such as Agua Inn in Nuevo Arenal or Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, are located right in front of the bus route, making access easy.
Although the 142 bus route covers most areas in La Fortuna, with the exception of the town of El Castillo, which is the area where the Arenal Volcano National Park and popular accommodations such as Rancho Margot, Nepenthe B&B and Essence Arenal Boutique Hostel are located, it is not included in the bus route. If your destination is El Castillo, you will need to complete the bus ride to the La Fortuna terminal and then take a taxi to your accommodation. This additional service costs approximately $25 USD.
